Adam Smith’s “sympathetic Impartiality” and Universality*

چکیده
I reconstruct here the implicit rationale of Smith’s ethical system, which unites in a single and consistent theory the most valuable features of both ancient virtue ethics and modern deontology. I propose that Smith could do this because of his approach to what I call “sympathetic impartiality”, and the pretension of universality that arises from it. In Smith’s theory, sentiments are moralized through the impartial spectator procedure which, willingly or not, changes the moral axis from emotivism to practical reason. Unlike rationalistic philosophers, Adam Smith did not explicitly articulate a rational structure to justify everyday talk and moral practice, nor did he use theoretical reasons to support these judgments. On the contrary, starting from empirical observations, he gave realistic and commonsensical explanations of how moral norms and judgments arise from the natural drives of human beings. However, I believe that the reconstruction of the rational structure underlying Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments is possible, and hence that we can unveil part of the implicit justification of this ethical system. Obviously I am not claiming that Smith intended or was even aware of this hypothetical theoretical framing I here propose, yet his insightful account of the psychological and anthropological basis for moral * Paper delivered at the American Philosophical Association Meeting held in 2004. Adam Smith and the contemporary world
This paper argues that many of Adam Smith’s insights, particularly those in his Theory of moral sentiments, have a relevance to contemporary thought about economics and ethics that is currently underappreciated. متن کاملThe Sympathetic Formation of Reason and the Limits of Science
I develop an interpretation of reason using the thought of David Hume and Adam Smith. I contend that reason in Hume and Smith can plausibly be interpreted as a kind of sensation. Reason is a sensation in that it is a sentimental conception of the relationship between two objects that impels certain interpretations. Reason is developed sympathetically in experiential contexts that not only guide...
متن کاملAdam Smith’s theory of absolute advantage and the use of doxography in the history of economics
This article reconstructs Adam Smith’s theory of international trade and compares it with the way it is presented in modern textbooks as the theory of absolute advantage. This textbook presentation falls short of Smith’s original ideas. I argue that the reason for this is the doxographic reconstruction of Smith’s theory to fit him into a Whig history of international trade theory. In this way t...
متن کاملAdam Smith's Stoicism and Self-command
With different nuances, the Stoics’ influence on Adam Smith and the Scottish Enlightenment is generally taken for granted. The many references to the Stoics, mainly in Smith’s TMS, and the importance of this classical tradition within the Scottish Enlightenment, have led scholars to acknowledge this apparently obvious influence. However, this influence is at times more elusive than obvious. If ...
